The Yoga Sutras Relationship to Yoga Today

Yogic philosophy had its beginnings within early Vedic civilization. This was a very advanced civilization that inhabited the regions now known as India and Pakistan. Their Sanskrit scriptures, known as "The Vedas", were heavily linked to the Hindu religion and gave rise to the texts on which modern-day Yoga philosophy is based.
Although written records of Yogic philosophy exist, many of the traditions were passed down orally from teachers to students over thousands of years. Hatha Yoga - the style from which modern practices arise - is largely based on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, a text in which he explains the eight limbs of Yoga still recognized today. Vedic sages started with the first step and progressively practiced each one for years before reaching the culmination of all eight: Self-realization.
1. Yama - social conduct
2. Niyama - individual conduct
3. Asana - physical poses
4. Pranayama - breathing techniques
5. Pratyahara - withdrawal of the senses
6. Dharana - concentration
7. Dhyana - meditation
8. Samadhi - ultimate state of super consciousness, or enlightenment
Patanjali also described nine obstacles to the practice of Yoga that are just as relevant in the 21st century as they were thousands of years ago:

• Laziness
Toward the end of the 1800s, Swami Vivekananda taught Patanjali's principles under the name of Raja Yoga. While Patanjali's Sutras were the major scriptures in the development of Yoga, other texts were also important:
• Upanishads - metaphysical concepts leading to ultimate truth about reincarnation and karma
• Bhagavad Gita - philosophy of Yoga in Hindu epic poem meaning "song of the blessed one"
• Gorraksha Paddhati - description of energy centers and explanation of chanting "OM"
• Hatha Yoga Pradipika - dissertation on the union of Hatha and Raja Yoga
Although the poses of Yoga date back before the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, they were not widely practiced by the public in India until the early 20th century. In 1946, Paramahansa Yogananda introduced the Kriya style of Yoga in his book, "Autobiography of a Yogi". In 1948, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga was introduced and became the system from which many Hatha Yoga systems in the United States were patterned during the 1960s.

The report also addresses issues such as how to encourage patients to engage in 'healthy' activities such as cycling and asks doctors to consult with local authorities to supply resources and additional green spaces to accommodate and support an increase in healthy living.
NICE, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, has gone on to publish guidance to help GPs and doctors achieve a number of these recommendations set out in the recently published report, and are also committed to helping patients in communities across the UK.

Until recently, private, fee-for-service insurance was the principal form of health insurance coverage. In this plan an individual pays a monthly premium, usually through an employer, which ensures health care on a fee-far-service basis. On incurring medical costs, the patient files a claim to have a portion of these costs paid by the insurance company. There is usually a deductible, an amount paid by the patient before being eligible for benefits from the insurance company. For example, if your expenses are $1000, you may have to pay $200 before the insurance company will pay the other $800. Usually the lower the deductible, the higher the premiums will be. Have You Heard of The CLASS Act?
The CLASS act is not an old movie or a book about rules for good behavior. Instead it is a provision of health reform, that is voluntary, and may help some families make nursing care more affordable.
CLASS stands for Community Living Assistance Services and Supports. It is a pat of the new health reform bill. It was passed by the US Senate and House of Representatives. Workers will be enrolled in this program, but may choose to decline it at any time according to the wording in the bill.
What Does the CLASS Act Do?
  • It is a voluntary program. Employers will be required to deduct premiums, but employees can opt out of this program if they choose to.
  • Premiums have not been determined yet. It is believed they will be lower tor people with low incomes, but.that average workers can expect to pay about $120 a month
  • If people under the program become disabled, it will pay about $50 a day for nursing care. Note that these people do not have to be over 65 years old.
  • The nursing care could be from a nursing home, but it could also be in-home care, such as a home health aide, adult day care or assisted living. So it pays for nursing homes or alternatives.
  • The plan premiums are set to be adjusted at a rate that will keep it solvent without any federal funds.
  • The CLASS act is NOT A TAX. It is voluntary.
Will This Health Reform Measure Help?
There is no doubt that nursing care is expensive, and that most of us faced a high chance of needing long term care at some point in our lives. A nursing home can cost well over $100 a day so this new bill is just part of the picture. It would help, but not totally keep us from needing to rely upon other assets, long term care insurance or government aid.
Is There Already Government Help To Pay For Nursing Care?

The other $50 - $100 a day would have to come from another source. This could be a private or group nursing home insurance policy, assets, or Medicaid.
This part of the plan has not been implemented yet. I also understand that there will be a waiting period, so nobody can sign up for the plan a few days before they need it. The benefits of this part of health reform are not going to affect us in the next few years, but may help younger people with their retirement planning.
