Black Hair Care 411 - Secrets on Moisturizing and Sealing Revealed

Do you want to find out why some black women are able to grow and retain long, healthy hair? These women don't want you to find out how they are doing it. Here's one of their secrets: moisturizing and sealing.
Secret 1: Maintaining moisture in your hair is the biggest element to a hair routine that yields results. We all grow hair at a rate of about half an inch per month. There are some people who grow faster or slower, but the majority of women, regardless of race, grow at a rate of about half an inch a month. Most of the women who seem to have that rapid growing hair? Theirs is growing at the same rate as yours. They've simply discovered something you haven't. Moisturizing and sealing on a regular basis is the key to length retention. What is moisturizing and sealing? You moisturize every strand of your hair with a water based moisturizer and then you seal in the moisture by coating every strand lightly in a nourishing oil.
Secret 2: You need to moisturize and seal in sections! Some of you ladies reading this all ready incorporate moisturizing and sealing into your regular routine, and yet you are still experiencing breakage and a lack of retention. I moisturized and sealed faithfully for years without seeing much improvement. But I was just kind of putting some product in my hands and rubbing it through my whole head. You're moisturizing at best 50-60% of your head that way! You want to section your hair into two sections at the very least, preferably four or more, and apply your moisturizer and then your oil to each section. Follow up by combing the product through each section with a wide tooth comb. You will definitely retain more length coating each strand of hair.
Secret 3: Avoid moisturizers with alcohol, mineral oil, lanolin and petrolatum. Look for water based creams and sprays, and look for products that contain glycerin! Glycerin actually draws moisture from the air around you into your hair! How cool is that? Alcohol dries your hair and mineral oil, lanolin and petrolatum sit on top of your hair and never penetrate. With oils natural is best. You can use the blue grease your grandma uses if you want, but jojoba oil, grapeseed oil and coconut oil are so much lighter, and they are much better for your hair.
Key to success: Be consistent! People complain that they already do this and that and they aren't seeing any results, but if you ask them how consistent they are, well, if you do something twice a month you're going to get twice a month results. I personally moisturize and seal twice a day, am and pm, but I urge you to do it at least once a day.
